High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE)
At Googong Public School, we are committed to nurturing the talents and abilities of every student. In alignment with the NSW Department of Education’s High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) Policy, we provide an inclusive and challenging learning environment that recognises and supports students with high potential across the intellectual, creative, social-emotional and physical domains.
We value the unique strengths of each learner and are dedicated to identifying high potential and gifted students early. Through high-quality teaching practices, differentiated instruction, enrichment opportunities and targeted support, we thoughtfully extend students’ learning and encourage deep engagement. Our programs are designed to challenge advanced learners, foster confidence and support both academic excellence and personal growth.
At Googong Public School, we believe that high potential is a starting point, and with the right support and opportunities, it can be developed into exceptional performance.

What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
Googong Public School is committed to recognising and nurturing high potential and gifted students, ensuring every learner has opportunities to thrive and reach their full potential.
- Teachers provide differentiated learning experiences that adjust pace, complexity and levels of higher-order thinking to meet the diverse needs of students. Ongoing assessment and feedback are used to monitor progress and inform responsive teaching, while explicit instruction supports the development of critical and creative thinking, problem-solving skills and learner independence. Flexible grouping structures promote collaboration, idea sharing and effective communication of learning.
- We create supportive, inclusive and safe learning environments where students feel confident to explore new ideas, take risks in their learning and persevere through challenges. Reflection is encouraged to help students develop a strong understanding of themselves as learners and to celebrate growth and achievement.
- Students are provided with opportunities to develop leadership skills within the classroom and through structured group activities that foster teamwork, shared responsibility and reflective practice. Teachers engage in ongoing professional learning and collaborate to design, implement and regularly review targeted programs that extend high potential and gifted students, ensuring their needs are identified early and addressed consistently.
Through this comprehensive and collaborative approach, Googong Public School ensures that high potential and gifted students are supported, challenged and empowered to succeed.
At Googong Public School, we recognise that every student is an individual. We provide flexible and inclusive learning opportunities that support students to explore their strengths, develop their interests and reach their full potential.
We offer a range of programs to support and extend our High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) students within the classroom and through the wider community. These opportunities nurture intellectual, creative, physical, and social development while encouraging challenge and engagement.
- Students can enhance their skills through Debating, Public Speaking, STEM and coding programs and the Premier’s Reading Challenge.
- Creative Arts opportunities, including dance, choir, visual arts and drama, allow students to express themselves and collaborate with others.
- Sporting pathways include Gala Days, Knockout Competitions and representative opportunities that promote teamwork, resilience and skill development.
- Leadership opportunities are available through Student Minister roles, Inquiry Centre Leaders, House Captains and transition programs.
Student wellbeing underpins all programs, with a strong focus on inclusion, resilience and belonging. We are proud to offer diverse opportunities that support our students to thrive academically, creatively, physically and socially.
